Towards the $/Year Mobile IoT Connectivity Solution

In the ongoing and ever changing Internet of Things Battle for Connectivity different options gain and loose importance as technologies and deployments change. No convergence on 'connectivity' standards yet to be seen but the field is evolving.

One of the unknowns is what final role mobile will eventually play and 'an expected' battle between the world's established mobile carriers using methods like 2G Data and NB-IoT and newcomers like LoRaWAN and sigfox.

At a recent IoT gathering I had the opportunity to listen and talk to Michael Orr, sigfox VP Sales/Partners in North American who describe the exciting roll out of sigfox network in the US where they now cover about 20% of the populated areas with their solutions. Worldwide sigfox has partner network covering 100's of devices and chip support from Texas Instrument, Silicon Labs and ON Semiconductors.

Needless to say, we are talking about very low data rates and 140/4 uplink/downlink messages per day with 12/8 bytes each, respectively. But with well engineered solutions these restrictions can be easily managed with effective message coding based on a solid 'event based' architecture - more on events in a later blog.

What is most exciting is the price points shared by Michael with the sought after $1/year in reach for the lowest least frequent communication offerings. With the promise of $1 chip solutions (in high volume) and the $1 yearly cost, we are truly looking at setting a new standard for IoT connectivity.

The current GSM competitive standard is $1/month which is a much bigger challenge to mass deployment than $1/year.

Operational and BOM costs are therefore quickly receding as IoT business inhibitors. However, this does not mean that we are any closer to mass IoT deployments as there are other huge inhibitors still standing. But as we all know, in the world of business decision making, everything helps!
